| The scouting forces were formed during 1944 to perform various reconaissance missions in support of planned bombing raids. While these forces were supported by various fighter groups, they reported directly to Bombardment Division (later Air Division) headquarters. Pilots were drawn from the ranks of the supporting fighter groups, as well as bomber pilots who had completed their tours. | ||||||||||||||||||||
