My paternal uncle, SSGT Kneeland Hughes Hudson served in the 367 BS, 306 BG at Thurleigh Air Field. He was a tail gunner in a B17G. His plane was "Nora" and I was amazed when I found some pictures of her at your site yesterday. Kneeland was killed on 11 Jan 44 during the deep raid on Germany that took place on that date. I have researched all of this thoroughly so have a great deal of info. Kneeland's plane's target was a Junkers 88 and Junkers 188 components plant in Halberstadt. They got their target but then they were hit. The Nora was last seen by the squadron spiraling downward and it was assumed they crashed. They didn't. Somehow, control of the plane was regained and it made it as far as Raalte, Holland where it crash landed at 1330 hours. It had lost its tail. (I don't know how much of it but did learn that a B17 could stay air worthy with very little of its tail remaining.) All on board were dead, according to the occupying Germans who entered the plane. Several minutes later and no more than a mile away, another B17 crash landed. One man was found alive but soon died. On order of the Germans, the Dutch citizens buried the fliers in individual graves, marking each with a cross. It had been my uncle's 11th mission. Those on the plane were: 1Lt. George Campert pilot 2Lt. Gerald C. Coots co-pilot 1Lt. John L. Dougherty navigator 1Lt. Joseph A. Sparks bombardier TSgt. Patrick F. Murray engineer TSgt. Cyril E. Lebert radio operator SSgt. Adolf Graubert ball turret gunner SSgt. Welton P. Teston waist gunner SSgt. Perley E. Colburn waist gunner SSgt. Kneeland H. He is buried in the American Military Cemetery at Margraten. His older brother, Ronald H. Hudson, jr.,had been declared MIA in the pto two months prior to Kneeland's death. He was in Naval Air and was en route to Hawaii on a PBY-5A Catalina. Declared dead on 7 Nov 44. My grandmother made her sole remaining son (my father) promise her he would never fly.
