19 February 2006: You could always search by unit number - and still can - but I have added the ability to search by group and squadron codes. Now that the machinery is in place, adding another query is pretty simple, so if you can think of one that would be useful, be sure and send it along using the link below. 5 March 2006 - I removed the feature that automatically shifted "focus" from one query to another as you move the cursor. As so often happens, that had an annoying side-effect that made the feature less useful than intended. Row highlighting continues to follow the cursor, but now you will have to click in a box in order to enter your query data (unless the cursor is already there). |

| Unit Number: Search for any numbered organization that was part of the 8th Air Force - whether group or squadron, wing, division, or command. This search will return all units containing the number(s) you enter. | |
| Group Codes were single letters painted on the vertical tail, and usually on the upper right wing panel. The letter appears in a large geometric shape - Triangle, Circle, or Square. | |
| Squadron Codes were painted on the sides of the aircraft in big characters. The pattern is two characters to identify the squadron, and one character assigned by the squadron for quick reference. Usually, the squadron identifier is the two characters closest to the nose. For example, a B-17 of the 545th Bomb Squadron (code = "JD") assigned the letter "C" by the squadron, would have "JD-C" on the left side of the aircraft, and "C-JD" on the right side. |
