Moonlight Cocktail

Description : Mike Conley - 3 Jan 2007: Moonlight Cocktail went down in the Mediterranean Sea on a mission to the oil refineries in Romania. The Pilot and co-pilot where killed. On a mission Sgt Monisillovich (tail gunner) bailed out over Yugoslavia to join the fight in his native land. He survived the war.

The 301st Heavy Bombardement Group flew its first missions as a part of the 8th Air Force, VIIIth Bomber Command, in England. November of 1942 the Group was transferred to the newly created 12th Air Force and relocated in North Africa. The B-17 bases were located on the Mediterranean coast near Bizerte, west of Tunis. The B-17's flew one mission in conjunction with the 376th Bomb Group (B24's) on November 2, 1943 - Weiner Neustadt, Austria. On November 1st the 301st BG(H) went to Foggia, Italy to refuel overnight and rendezvoused with the B24's on the morning of the 2nd. A formation of 100 4-engine bombers then went on to the target.
On November 1, 1943 the 12th AF was merged into the new 15th Army Air Force and eventaly completed the war in Europe. While attached to the 15th AAF, 5th Bomb Wing the B-17's of the 301st were based in Lucera, Italy a satelite air field of Foggia, Italy.
