We think perhaps he was in the 305th Bomb group. 2nd Lt. almost positve a Bombardier on a B-17 Flying missions in 1944, maybe 1943. Graduated from Ordnance Officer's Training School at Aberdeen Proving Grounds as the 29th class, 1943, Company C 4th Platoon. I have the class book. Also I have a scrapbook that among other things mentions both Gowen Field in Boise and MacDill in Florida with accompanying photos. He enlisted from Yonkers NY where he grew up. He died August 16th 2003. I am his daughter. I am attempting to find out what he did and with whom in WWII. I want to know who his crew members were if in fact he was a bombardier on a b-17. Thank you for any info that you may have.
The service ribbon (left breast) is interesting. It is the "Europe-Africa-Middle East Campaign (1941-1945)" ribbon with three battle stars (signifying participation in three camapigns or theaters). There is no WWII victory medal, so the photo is no later than about mid-1945.
The unit ribbon (right breast) has a frame around it, so it is either a Presidential Unit Citation or a Meritorious Unit Commendation. The PUC ribbon is dark blue, whereas the MUC is red. His records should tell which.
He is not wearing wings, from which I infer that he was not a rated aircrew member. The lapel insignia appears to be a globe with a figure of some sort atop, although the reflections make them appear as two bombs. It is worn in the position of "Branch Insignia". The closest match is Ordnance.
Question - what are the Branch Insignias described above? Haven't been able to identify them.
Scott Persons - 11 Oct 2006: I have no idea who the individual in the photograph is, but I can tell you he is not a Bombardier nor any other officer aircrew member. He is branched to the Ordnance Corps indicated by the flaming grenade (Bomb) Ordnance branch insignia on his lapel. If he was a rated Bombardier, he would be wearing Bombardier wings and he would be wearing the Wing and Prop branch insignia for the USAAC/USAAF. Additionally, he is wearing eyglasses. Vision requirements for WWII officer aircrew (Pilots/Bombardiers/Navigators)was 20/20.
