Sikes' Combat History
| Description | : | A montage of Bill Sikes' combat history. After 25 missions with the 305th BG, Sikes flew 32 combat missions with the 499th BG in Saipan. Sikes received the Purple Heart when a Japanese 20mm shell exploded behind the instrument panel, resulting in very bloody and painful wounds to his upper body. Sunglasses saved his sight, and allowed Sikes to keep command of the aircraft until landing, thereby saving the B-29 and his crew. |
