Description : 42-30650, KY-D, at Chelveston with unknown crewman. The A/C was Lt. Verl Fisher, who trained in the US as copilot for Bill Sikes. Fisher was pulled off of the Sikes crew upon arrival in UK, and assigned command of 42-30650. Fisher never gave the aircraft a name or nose art. The Fisher crew and 42-30650 had a close call over Chelveston on 9/23/43 when Polly Ann's (42-30647) wing hit between Fisher's #1 and 2 engines, shearing off his LH stabilizer and Polly Ann's wing. Fisher and a third B-17, 42-30809 of Robert Lang, managed to land safely. The Fisher crew would be reassigned to 42-3195, only to be shot down on Black Thursday, 10/14/43, near Waldenrath, Germany. Two minutes later, Lt. Robert Lang would be KIA in the loss of 42-37750. Fisher and five of his crew were taken POW at Stalag Luft 3.
