The crew of 42-29952 "Sizzle" on 10/11/43. A/C Capt. Ernest A. "Bill" Sikes is on the far right of the back row. The last mission of the Sikes crew in Sizzle was on 10/8/43 to Bremen. Three days after this photo, 10/14/43, Sizzle was lost with the brand new Douglas Murdock crew (364th BS) over Holland on the Schweinfurt mission. Murdock and four of his crew were KIA. Sizzle was the first of 13 305th BG aircraft to be lost that day. In the inset is a 2003 photo of Bill Sikes and Eric Milliken, whose Eagle Scout project was to assist Sikes with a 305th BG "Black Thursday" display at the Casper, WY Veteran's Museum. |
