Car Park, 1942 or 1943
| Description |
: |
This location positively identified in 2004 by the current owners as the car park just north of the Brampton Grange building.
These 43 men are probably the 1st Bomb Wing staff early in the war, as described below, before the 1st Wing was supplanted by the 1st Division and moved to Bassingbourn.
To help in identifying this photo, here is a list of the Wing COs for the period in question: Col Claude E Duncan (c. 19 Aug 1942), Brig Gen Newton Longfellow (21 Aug 1942;), Brig Gen Laurence S Kuter (1 Dec 1942), Brig Gen Haywood S “Possum” Hansell Jr (2 Jan 1943), Brig Gen Frank A Armstrong Jr (15 Jun 1943), Brig Gen Robert B Williams (1 Aug 1943). Please add a comment if you recognize any of these men in the photo.
Sir: I have a photo of my father, Major Henry Bascom Williams (although he may not have held that rank in
this photo) with about 40 other men, all in their AF uniforms. In the background is a tall brick wall and building.
It appears to be winter (probably of 1942). I would very much like to know more about this photo as there are no
notations on it. My father was with the 8th AF, Hqs 1st Bombardment Division/Wing and was killed in a plane (B-17) accident on Sept,14, 1943 on Skiddaw Mt. near Keswick, England.
Major Williams is the fourth one inward from the left (squatting to the right of the man standing) I know nothing about this picture and am guessing it was taken the winter of 1942/43, since my dad arrived in England Aug., 1942 |
