Gedenkstein 1945

Gedenkstein 1945

Description : http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/1393/andy2.html
I have another mystery about mission 824, according to the chronology of the US Airforce 3 B-17's were lost that day, Andy mentions only 2 in his diary. I suspect the 3rd was from another squadron which attacked Jena on the same day.
The chronolgy lists 11 aircraft attacking Jena.
This stone was erected to commemorate this event, it reads (in German) "In memory of the 9th of February 1945, the victims of the 2nd Worldwar from the street to Jena and the crew of the American aircraft"
Why would an American air crew be so honoured ??

Please feel free to add your comments to help unravel this mystery!
Location : In the middle of a forest near the autobahn cross at Hermsdorf (12 miles east of Jena).
