In the summer of 1944, 8th Air Force fighters continued to provide long-range escort service to protect the bombers. However, their prime mission was to attack and incapacitate the Luftwaffe, attacking it in the air and on the ground. When circumstances permitted, fighters attacked additional targets of opportunity, such as rail traffic and ground troops.
