Jamaica Ginger - Heading Home

Look at the top photo on page 233 of Roger Freeman's "The Mighty Eighth - A History of the Men and Machines of the US 8th Air Force". That's Jamaica Ginger, and the man in the T-shirt is Lt. Edward Mills, a co-pilot with the 563 BS, 388 BG - Chris Mills' father. This picture, with the crew closer to the camera and looking straight at it, was taken at the same historic moment, on the morning of departure for Bradley Field, Connecticut, 22 June 1945. The Ginger flew more missions than any other ship in the 388th - 137!
In the front row, the man on the left in the T-shirt is Lt. Mills, and the man on the right is Lt. Lucas. The officer standing in the middle is Lt. Col. Chester Cox, Commanding Officer of the 388th BG. The others are not identified with certainty. The Lucas crew included Pilot Lt. John D.Lucas, Co-Pilot Lt. Ed. W. Mills, Navigator Lt. Jos. L. Savadel, Engineer M/Sgt. Fred M. Rivers, Radio Operator Sgt. E. L. Kelly, Togglier Sgt. Frank J. Smith, Ball Turret Sgt. Frank B. Lewis, Waist Gunner Sgt. H. I. Heermann, Tail Gunner Sgt. Jerry L. Gross. |
